Hypertensive Emergency

When is it considered an emergency if a patient is hypertensive?
-An acute elevation in BP that requires the BP to be lowered within 1 hour.

Remember, any systolic number above 140 mmHg is considered to be hypertensive.

So, if we have a 88 y/o M with a hypertensive emergency, what should we do for the patient?
-Oxygen, IV Access (KVO due to the high BP), rapid transport
-Depending on protocol, and calling MED CONTROL, you may consider giving morphine, but
           cal med control first
